COMMUNITY INFORMATION FACT SHEET
The Juniata Valley School District is planning a full reopening for students and staff on August 26, 2020. The current information, guidance, and statistics provided to us from the PA Department of Education, the Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and other agencies have been guiding forces in our reopening plan. According to The PA department of Health, 1 % of confirmed cases in Huntingdon and the nine surrounding counties have included children ages 5 to 12. In that same region, 3% of positive cases have included children ages 13 to 18. The district health and safety plan is being developed to help minimize the spread of COVID-19 amongst our students and staff.
Families that do not feel comfortable sending their child back to school in the fall, will be given the opportunity to participate in a fully remote online learning option through the Virtual Learning Network. This option does cost the district $3,500.00 per child. In the event of another school closure, the teachers at Juniata Valley School District will provide online remote instruction for all students in the district. The district would be utilizing the Canvas Learning Management System at the High School and Google Classroom at the Elementary. Grades, attendance, and participation would be required for all students. All of our students will be provided with a device and internet access would be made available in the school parking lots for downloading materials and submittal of assignments.

What is COVID-19?
-Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus that was first identified after an outbreak in Wuhan, China.
What are symptoms of COVID-19?
-The most common symptoms associated with COVID-19 include, but not limited to: fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, headache, body aches, loss of taste or smell, sinus congestion, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
These symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure and can range from mild to severe.
How is COVID-19 spread?
-Just like the flu and other illnesses, COVID-19 is spread through respiratory droplets in the air after a person coughs or sneezes, or touching an object that has the virus on it and then touching your mouth, eyes, or nose.
How do I protect myself?
-Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick
-Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
-Good hand washing with soap and water or hand sanitizer
-Social distancing
How can I keep from spreading the illness to others?
-Stay home when you are sick
-Cover your cough or sneeze
-Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
-Wear a face covering, such as a mask or shield.
Face coverings in school:
-Face coverings are now required for all public places in Pennsylvania, including in schools.
-Face coverings are required for children over the age of two years old.
-Face coverings are okay to be removed when: eating/drinking, participating in physical education and band/chorus classes.
-Individuals who are communicating or seeking to communicate with someone who is hearing impaired or another disability where the ability to see the mouth is essential, should consider using a plastic face shield.
What to do if your child is sent home with COVID-19 symptoms?
-We recommend following up with your child’s family medical doctor for evaluation. Your child should stay home until symptom free. Your child should also be fever free for 24 hours (temperature under 100.4 without the use of medication) before returning to school.
What if my child is COVID-19 positive?
-Follow guidance from your child’s doctor or the PA State Health Department. Please keep your child home and quarantined for 14 days and provide documentation from the doctor’s office upon returning to school.
What if a family member in the same household as my child tests positive for COVID-19?
-Follow the guidance of the doctor, hospital, or PA State Health Department.
