We would like to inform you of some very exciting opportunities that are available for all students in the Juniata Valley School District.
We are excited to offer some new courses for all students in the area of STEM. All ninth-grade students will be required to participate in a coding course provided by code.org. The course takes a wide lens on computer science by covering topics such as programming, physical computing, HTML/CSS, and data. The course inspires students as they build their own websites, apps, games, and physical computing devices.
As an elective opportunity in later grades, Computer Science Principles will be available. This course is designed to prepare students who are new to computer science for the AP CS Principles exam. The course covers many topics including the Internet, Big Data and Privacy, and Programming and Algorithms.
In addition to the STEM specific courses, we will continue to offer a four-year General Agriculture program and will also be scheduling students who will be in the ninth grade in the 2019-2020 school year in this program. Students who complete this program and receive a competent or advance score on the final NOCTI exam will receive college credit in Agriculture that is transferable to Delaware Valley University and Pennsylvania College of Technology.
We are currently offering a four-year Administrative Assistant and Secretarial Science. Students who complete this program and receive a competent or advance score on the final NOCTI exam will receive college credits in Introduction to Business and Microcomputer Applications that is transferable to Penn Highlands Community College. This program is available to students in grades 9-12.
During the scheduling process, these opportunities were highlighted and are in the process of being implemented for the 2019-2020 school year. Please talk with your daughter or son about these exciting opportunities to ensure that they are aware of them. We will be posting this letter to the Juniata Valley School District website to ensure that you are aware of these opportunities and so that you can assist your child in determining if their career objectives would benefit by completing any of these courses of study at JVHS.
